Clare & Mark Pousson/Wolter

We are a couple who have spent most of lives in the creative arts.  In 1993 our paths crossed at an art show, since then we have merged our lives and our talents into creating art pottery out of the studio and home that we have built together on our little piece of the hill country between Wimberley and Blanco.  We are both integral to the process of creating each and every piece.  We use a combination of wheelthrown and hand-built techniques all done in porcelain.  Mark does all the wheelthrown work and also designs and makes many of the hand-built pieces.  Recently he has begun trying his hand at painting on the pieces as well.   Clare prefers to do only hand-built work and the hand-painted embellishments.  Lately she has also been exploring a new technique of stamping and imprinting the clay then finishing with a wiped color-wash.

Each individual piece is constructed in an original design striving for a classical form while also attaining to serve a purpose.  We choose to make utilitarian items because a certain pleasure arrives from enjoying a meal on handcrafted dinnerware.  We cherish that distinct joy found in storing treasures or fresh flowers in a unique box or vase that was lovingly fashioned by hand.   After construction, and a bisque firing, the forms are glazed and hand-painted in a free-form style rendering no two pieces exactly alike, then a final firing at over 2250 degrees.

Many designs are created on the spot, with the finished product coming out quite different than originally intended.  It is as if the pieces ‘speak’ to us during the process and lead us to areas we had not previously considered.  This is one of the many aspects that lead to our enjoyment in creating these items.  We hope you may find equal pleasure in them as well.
