Born in Vietnam and adopted as a baby, my parents brought me home to the flatlands of Lubbock, Texas where I was raised. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Texas at Austin with an emphasis on classical ballet. After graduation, I moved to New York City where I discovered the art of creating pottery as a way of truly expressing myself. After 16 years of classical ballet training, I decided to retire my pointeshoes and get my hands dirty in clay. I returned to Austin, Texas in 1998 and have been a local potter ever since. Working 18 years as the Senior Thrower for Sunset Canyon Pottery and teacher for the adult throwing classes. I am now a full time studio potter at Eye of the Dog Art Center in San Marcos,TX. I make wheel thrown, functional, high-fired pottery created for everyday use that is aesthetically beautiful and may be displayed prominently in one's home. I enjoy the technical challenges and endurance required to develop one's skills in order to create a piece on the pottery wheel. I primarily use Shino and Celadon glazes using stoneware and porcelain clay. Each glaze pattern has layers of depth and color with oxide and porcelain slip brush decoration. My love of ballet influences my brush work and creates a dance-like rhythm of motion on each piece of pottery. The concrete, repetitive nature of wheel throwing frees my imagination while my brushwork allows many opportunities for happy accidents and grace to influence the finished product.
